Above, an ‘experiences like’ prototype made out of paper and screen printed electrical wires. The farmers take their soil sample, add extractant solution, and then place the reader and ion selective electrodes in the cup to measure soil nutrient content. A number code results, which they then text to a central service provider along with the letter code of the crop they are growing to get immediate, customized soil fertilizer advisory.

Ion selective electrode strips | the working electrode (WE) undergoes a voltage change with respect to the reference electrode (RE) in reaction to soil nutrient content; screen carbon nanotubes (CNTs) are the base electrode material and silver chloride (AGCL) is the reference electrode material

Handheld reader | converts the voltages in each channel of nitrogen (N), phosphate (P), potassium (K), and pH into a textable numeric output which farmers text to a central service provider along with the letter code of the crop they are growing
